We've been playing pool for quite awhile since last year, and finally found some courage to play a game of billiard (or snooker) yesterday with Michael. Its definitely more fun and challenging than pool, and give me more "satisfaction" everytime the ball goes into the pocket.

Busy December

Now at Jeddah airport, after spending 6 long days in Saudi, finally going back to Dubai. 3 days in Riyadh & 3 days here is really long and hectic. Can't wait to get back to Club GS10 and have a good rest... Too much less sleep!!!

The next few months will be tougher. Hope that i can focus well, and insha'allah things can get good here. This may be my biggest challenge yet...

Had a great week when my family visited me before i came to Saudi. Spent lots of quality family time together (with TF too), and home cooked food... Mum almost brought the whole fridge over! Can't wait to finish up the remaining goodies.

Half the month has passed in a blink... and hope that i'll be back in SG for CNY soon...

Having 4 days off from work during the Eid holidays, so we decided to go somewhere. Went to Fujairah on friday, but it was quite disappointing. So Ed and I decided to go somewhere more interesting: Jebel Hafeet - the highest point in the UAE.

Jebel Hafeet is in Al Ain, and will have to take the mountain road to the top. This road, some calls it the World's Greatest Driving Road. Go search on the internet, there're many articles and pics on this famous road. Here's a link.

Its about 1.5 hrs drive from Dubai, and the mountain road up takes about 15 mins for a casual drive. Truely magnificent...

Found mee sua in Carrefour when buying our weekly groceries today, and so happen its my chinese birthday... so why not?!

Ingredients:
Mee Sua
Bak Kut Teh from last night
Eggs

Preperation:
Boil bak kut teh, then add mee sua. Cook for about 3 minutes.
Concurrently, cook the egg (hard boil).
Add pepper.

Final outcome...Ok... the hard boiled became half boiled eggs... but its really damn good...

Was really happy that Iraq won the Asian Cup 1-0 over Saudi Arabia earlier. At least its something for the Iraqi people to cheer about, a rare chance for them to unite as one.

My Iraqi customer told me this afternoon that they're having a curfew today from 4pm, cause "may have bomb"... On some days, his staff in Baghdad don't go to work cause the only road to their shop is closed due to a roadside car bomb. I joked to him that i want to go there for market visit... :P Even he thinks that its too dangerous to go back to their capital.

Interestingly, some recent football finals were won by teams amid difficult situations, eg Italy when they won the World Cup, AC Milan when they won the Champion's League, and now Iraq... Maybe its during such situations, that everyone in a team really comes together, and play as a team to prove themselves... Hmm, so how to make Singapore win anything?!?! Hahaha...

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Some Thoughts

(Before reading further, notice that i've added date and time and weather on the right?? :P)

Had the opportunity to travel earlier this week. Spent 3 days in Riyadh, 1 day in Jeddah and 1 day in Khobar / Dammam (still dono if they are 2 different places, or they have overlapped with age...). What an eye openner. One can immediately feel the presence of Islam and their traffic. How can anyone miss the towering Kingdom Center sitting in the middle of their capital... We went up to the skybridge, and what a sight from the tallest building in the kingdom...

Spent a day in Jeddah, and went to Dammam alone that night. Feeling really fcuk up that night, all alone in a foreign land, going to another city that 6 months ago, i've never knew existed. Checked into the hotel at 2+am, did some packing, and fell asleep almost immediately i laid on the bed. The next day was hectic, and before i know it, was in the airport. Had some time to do some reading before boarding the flight back. First thing i did when i reach home? Reach for a can of cold beer from the fridge, accompanied by a puff on the balcony...

One thing that i must comment on, almost everyone from the taxi driver to hotel service staffs asked if i'm from China or Phillippines. All of them had the same reaction when i said: "no, Singapore...", and their usual remark: "Ahh... Singapore, very good!". Singaporeans are being held in high regard and well respected in this region.. Really makes one feel proud to have come from that tiny dot on the map...

Hoping that its just as rewarding when it comes to work. The big one i've been working on for almost 6 months is finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel, one big deal almost over, hopeful of another one or two more. Will be taking up some small markets here, just to add to my portfolio, increase my revenue and justify my presence here i guess...

Working here was probably the biggest decision i've had to make in my life (so far), but it has shown me another part of the world and given me some good time to straighten some thoughts. Friends always ask me when i'll be going back, whether i'm planning to stay here for long. As of now, i really don't know, just trying to do my job well... Insha'allah...

After having it for more than a year, finally decided to do some reading and learn how to return it to the correct state... took a few days to solve it, thanks to an online guide that is simple to understand with its step by step beginner's approach. But if you are interested in looking deeper into the rationale for each move, it gets pretty complicated... Feels like reading programming code, and trying to understand the algorithm...

But its really fun... Ok, Ed has been saying that I'm a geek...

Without doors, roof, backseats... but it sure looks good...

Costing Dhs15,000 (approx. SGD6.5k), after lots of considerations and self-assurance, i finally decided to make it mine. Definitely not a car in the best of conditions (hey, its a 1992 model!), but after putting it to a good test in the desert, and after lots of bullshitting from a garage trying to rip me off, guess i'm glad i made this choice.

Its kind of like Transformer. I have the option of putting the hard top or soft top, with or without rear seats, and even with or without doors. Its in its barebone now, and with the amount of noise from the engine and exhaust, its making alot of heads turn...

Bashing the dunes, climbing up those huge slopes, getting stuck on the crest and sand bath on this powerful machine are some of the amazing experiences i got when we went to the desert on New Year's Day. An amateur like me didn't even get stuck in the dunes, thanks to this forgiving beast. Learning a few tricks from the lao jiaos, and hoping to go more often in the coming weekends.

Seeing the sunrise and sunset in the middle of a desert is simply breathtaking. Its really therapeutic to stop at the top of a big dune, and take a look of the endless grains of fine sand from your feet running all the way to the horizon where it meets the clear blue sky, while enjoying the silence and cold fresh air. At least for this time of the year...

Oh by the way, i'll be getting the doors, roof and seats from the previous owner soon. I wouldn't want to go for an open concept drive during summer... Even at about 15 degree celcius now, i'm enjoying every minute of the drive...

Havent seen rain for a long time. So when we saw rain in office, everyone was excited, and stood at the window and have a look. The last time it rained here was in Feb or March. Heard that its raining everyday in singapore now. haha...
Anyway, the rain is not that a wonderful thing. It actually washes all the dirt in the air, and brings it down to earth. All the cars are covered with a thick layer of dirt, and we had to go for a car wash. It was a cold evening, with the cold wind blowing, and it was then we realise that winter is near.

It has been a while since i had a post. Have been very busy lately at work cause of the exhibition Gitex. Flu and sorethroat came after the whole thing ended. I wouldn't say that life is that tough here. I've set my mind to come, so i'll put my heart into my work. Results are on the way, and i won't be back to sg anytime soon. Will be busy for the next few weeks ahead, after getting all the contacts and meeting many ppl last week. Hope that some big thing will work out. The first dollar revenue finally came, and hope the rest will flow in soon. And now to secure the other big fish...

Weather has finally turned cooling. Had a first taste of cold wind earlier with Ed and I sitting at the balcony having a drink. Reminds me of Japan, with the cooling wind blowing, holding a cup of hot tea. Nice... Have been driving with the windows down these few nights. Water at the beach is getting cold. So cold that Ed struggled getting into the water, and that deterred me from joining him. Ended up sitting on the chair, enjoying the last few weeks of hot sun. Until a 15 min game of beach soccer with dad and son pair got us totally exhausted...

Had a pleasant surprise yesterday morning when i woke up to see lots of msn messages, all from my old friends. Apparently Alvin has found a long lost friend from our QSTS days. Think they'll be meeting up soon, and i guess i'll be missing out on the fun again.

Seems that the sat morning jog will be temporarily cancelled. Anyway the pics on Alvin's blog were taken long time ago, but they sure brought back good memories of our weekly ritual.

Wanted to post some pics, but blogger's server is having problems. Had a hard time uploading a couple of pics, but suddenly they're all lost. sian...

Anyway, we went to a cafe called Singapore Deli on Thurs night. I had Nasi Lemak and teh takik. But the teh is nowhere near how its suppose to taste like, think the ones i make taste better. The nasi lemak was quite good though. The chilli tastes great! The cafe serves mainly Malay food, and isn't too ex. Will definitely go back again (not so soon) for their chili.

We had Japanese curry for dinner on fri. We bought the instant pack of jap curry from a supermarket, which is the same one as what i bought home from japan. Taste almost like the real thing. Not bad... Both Ed and I believe that we'll become great chefs one day! hahaha...

Sat morn, we went to Jumeira beach. Very nice beach, but feels abit funny going to the beach with another guy. Like gay... pengz... Aniway, soaked in the sun and sea for a few hours and did some reading. Will definitely post some pics when possible. Think we'll be going there more often. After getting the car, its much more convenient, and we dont have to rot at home anymore...

Here's a pic taken fr my balcony... Spinneys is the supermarket where Ed and I buys most of our stuffs. Things there are generally more ex than in Carrefour. But at least we have the convenience. As you can see, sand is in abundance, and sun is pretty strong here. Weather now is similar to Singapore's but with much lower humidity.

We had instant noodles yesterday for lunch, with a special side dish: luncheon meat. Yes, we finally found pork here. There is a section carefully tucked away at a corner of Spinneys that we only found out this week. There are pork and other non-halal stuffs there. Haha, bak kut teh one of these days...

Meeting at 745hrs at Blk 6C Margaret Drive foyer, walking to ridout rd, strolling for half a km, starting slow after seeing the slow down sign, admiring the huge house, turning out to holland road, passing Botanical garden, passing British council, cross the junction to tanglin mall, trying to trick others to miss the ramp, slow down when approaching Wheelok place junction, speed up as we cross the junction, race down towards Ngee Ann City, finally stopping for a warm down. Talk a slow walk towards cuppage, finally stopping at Isle Cafe for breakfast. 3 X 100Plus, noodles with luncheon meat and luncheon meat... talk cock until song, then proceed to take 111. Go up and sit right at the front, hoping that there are no ads blocking our views, though falunggong is no longer there... reached home feeling healthy and satisfied...
haha... really miss those times...

My first weekend in Dubai. Weather is gettin better, feels like Singapore's weather now. Went to some malls these few days. Malls here are really huge. They have all the major brands under one roof. Sales are everywhere, generally clothes are cheaper than back at home. Didn't get to eat any mooncakes on Mid Autumn festival though. Spent most of the time at home, and my notebook is the source of my work and entertainment. Will have to put up with this old system for the time being, but will consider getting a new one. Luckily i have my MS2i to accompany me now, while my beloved SR80 is resting in good hands back in Singapore. It's really nice though to listen to music late at night in a very quiet environment. BTW, i'm listening to Buena Vista Social Club now, Cuban music. You guys may wan to give it a try. A different kind of music, i like it alot. Kind of nice having so much freedom, something that i will not be able to experience back home. Will be looking around for a car soon, will have much more freedom then, haha... Miss everyone back at home... *yawn... night guys...

Finally i can find some time to let u guys know abit about Dubai. First impression: hot. Any people here say that its "cooling". I think its about 36 degree celcius now, but the hottest days are over. Phew... Sand is everywhere, take away the buildings and roads, it will become a desert. Wherever you turn your head, you will see constructions going on. Cranes and half built buildings line along the Sheikh Zayed road, which is the expressway i take to work everyday. There are more constructions going on in Dubai than any parts of the world now. I live in Bur Dubai, and going to Jebel Ali Free Zone where i work takes at least half hour (at more than 100km/h) of commuting in a colleague's car. The first day i took a cab to work with my boss cost abt S$30+! To and fro will amount to abt S$70 daily if i take a cab. Food is expensive here, i saw lettuce at a supermarket costing about S$7!!! Luckily i still manage to find some decent food at decent prices. Kebab and sharwama was my first "al fresco" dining experience here, thanks to my house mate Edmund. Though the temperature is high, the low humidity doesnt make us perspire as much. I cooked my first pasta here: Carbonara. Taste nowhere near what i've eaten at Spaggedies, but... hungry... Ok, i shall end here, will update when i have more time...

Other than the popular Teh and Kopi, there are many other beverages that are available in kopitiams.

Tak Giu (kick ball) - Milo
- refer to Tutorial 1, the same list of adjectives can be used

Diao He (fishing) - Chinese Tea (Bag)
- can be any of the following: tie guan yin, xiang pian or oolong

Gim Boon Tai (hokkien) or Clementi - Lemon Tea
- can either be home-made or can variants

Dai Ga Hou - Horlick
- refer to Tutorial 1, the same list of adjectives can be used

Jid Ba (One Hundred) - 100 Plus
- for larger quantity orders, eg. three cans of 100 Plus can be orderred as Sa Ba (Three Hundred) etc.

NOUNS
Teh = tea with condensed milk
Teh Si (aka Teh C) = tea with evaporated milk and sugar
Teh O = tea without milk, with sugar

ADJECTIVES
Siu Dai = less sweet
(less condensed milk for Teh, less sugar for Teh Si & Teh O)

Kah Dai = more sweet
(more condensed milk for Teh, more sugar for Teh Si & Teh O)

Kosong = no sugar
(only applicable to Teh Si or Teh O, because only these 2 have sugar added)

Gao = thick
(more tea, add less water)

Poh = thin
(less tea, add more water)

Peng = iced
(cold tea variants)

USAGE EXAMPLES
"Teh Si Siu Dai"
Tea with evaporated milk and sugar, but not so sweet

Thicker tea
